Discussing the differences, there are many, too many, models of laptops today. There is so much demand in this sector that models of all possible types and characteristics exist. Some of them are so similar that they tend to be confused.
This guide aims to know the difference between all the available models: laptops, notebooks, netbooks, and tablets. The main differences are weight, thickness, the components they include, size, and autonomy.
Laptop (Notebook) or laptop
You will think that it is the most common model, but no, what is expected is the name since practically any accessible mobile computer is called a laptop. Some consider Laptop and Notebook to be different terms; others say they are the same, and I believe they are the same.
Laptops had great success when presented as such since it was the perfect way to have everything you needed in the briefcase on your back. Manufacturers quickly realized what was selling and that people saw weight and size as the main drawbacks, and from there, more categories emerged.

Netbook
They are quickly characterized by having a reasonably small size and low cost but also a very tight performance. They started because of the demand for low-cost laptops for academic or executive use. The Asus Eee PC was one of the most famous, and with it, the expansion of Netbooks began.

- Screen size ranges from approximately 7 to 11″
- They do not have a reading unit
- They do not have 3.5″ hard drives
- They have few connections since their small size does not allow the integration of a motherboard with great features.
- The price usually does not exceed €300

Ultrabook
Many people prefer them since they have great power in a slim format (relatively thin).
They are chosen for those who need good performance, low weight, and light thickness. The main drawback is their price, they are not usually cheap, since you cannot find anything similar in features and you pay for that.
- They weigh little, between 1 and 2.5kg
- Size is usually between 11 and 14″
- They do not have a reading unit
- The hard drive comes in 1.8 or 2.5″ SSD format
Convertible Ultrabook
This division has been seen quite a bit lately. They are characterized because their screen is capable of rotating 180º and folding so that we can transform an Ultrabook into a Tablet.
The characteristics are similar to those of Ultrabooks since the only difference lies in the mobility of the screen.
Convertible Tablet
- This is more modern; it is becoming fashionable lately, although it has been on the market for some time.
- It is a Tablet (screen only) capable of working independently, but it can also be anchored to a dock (as a base) and thus quickly converted into a laptop.
- The port to which the Tablet is connected has a battery that complements that of the Tablet and incorporates a keyboard to make typing easier.
- One of the first models we saw was the Asus Transformer, which was a bit costly.
- Screen size is usually between 10 and 13.”
- Meager weight, although it depends on the battery included in the dock, from less than 1kg to 2
- They have the advantage of opting for more autonomy than usual.
